UK window tint law explained — how dark can you legally go?

Which windows can I tint?

• Front side windows: must let through at least 70% of light.
• Rear side windows: no legal limit.
• Rear screen: no legal limit.

Why does my factory glass matter?

Factory glass is not completely clear — most cars leave the factory with front glass that already blocks some light. Film works on top of that, so the finished result is darker than the film's own rating. That's why we check your actual glass before choosing a film for the fronts instead of quoting a shade blind.

What happens if the front tint is too dark?

• Police can issue a prohibition notice, so the car can't be driven until the film is off.
• You can be fined.
• It can be an MOT failure — testers check front tints.

If you're in that position it's fixable: tint removal is £40 per window and we can fit a compliant front tint the same visit.

Is chameleon tint legal?

We fit chameleon on the front windscreen only — nowhere else on the vehicle. Front side windows still have to let at least 70% of light through, so they use a light legal film instead.

Are sunstrips legal?

A sunstrip along the top of the windscreen is fine as long as it stays outside the area swept by the wipers and doesn't obstruct your view.

What do most customers have fitted?
