When do you need a replacement number plate?

A plate has to be clean, secure and clearly legible at all times. If yours isn't, it needs replacing — a cracked or faded plate can be picked up as a fault at MOT and can attract a fine on the road.

You can order a single plate if only one is damaged, or a pair if you'd rather they match perfectly. Colour and reflectivity fade with age, so if the surviving plate is several years old a matched pair usually looks better.

• Cracked, chipped or bent after a knock or car wash
• Faded, yellowed or delaminating reflective face
• Characters lifting on a 3D gel or 4D set
• Plate no longer legible or MOT advisory received
• A spare kept for a trailer, plinth or track use

What does a replacement plate cost?

A single replacement plate is £15 and a standard pair is £30. If you're replacing a raised set, the same styles are available: 3D gel £35, 4D £40, 4D gel £45 and retro £60 a pair. Short, square and import sizes are £25.

Prices are paid in full at order — there's no deposit on plates — and Royal Mail signed-for postage is added at checkout. Collection from our Dagenham workshop is free.

What documents do you need for a replacement?

Road-legal plates must come from a DVLA Registered Number Plate Supplier, and we're required to see proof of your identity and proof of your entitlement to the registration before making them. You upload both during the order — no posting paperwork.

• Proof of identity — driving licence, or passport with a recent utility/council tax bill
• Proof of entitlement — V5C log book, new keeper slip, V750/V778 retention certificate, or a lease/hire agreement

If your plates were stolen

Report a stolen plate to the police so you have a crime reference number — that protects you if the plate is later used on another vehicle, for example at a fuel station or in a camera offence. Then order replacements as normal; we still need the same ID and entitlement documents.

How long does a replacement take?

Plates are made in 1–2 working days once your documents are checked, then posted by Royal Mail signed-for — typically 1–3 further working days depending on the service you pick. We text the tracking number when they leave us, and we can hold them for free collection instead if you're local to Dagenham.
