    Good to know

Legal stuff & how ordering works.

    What is BS AU 145e?

BS AU 145e is the current British Standard every UK road-legal number plate must meet. It covers the reflective base, character font (Charles Wright), character height (79 mm) and spacing, charcoal-grey colour, weather resistance and durability. Every plate we press carries the BS AU 145e mark, our DVLA-registered supplier name and our Dagenham postcode pressed into the bottom edge — the police, MOT testers and ANPR cameras all check for it.

Tinted backgrounds, italics, novelty fonts, coloured outlines and sticker plates fail BS AU 145e — they're show-only and risk a £1,000 fine plus an MOT failure if fitted to a road-driven car.

    FAQs

    Number plate questions, answered.

Are 3D and 4D number plates legal in the UK?

Yes — raised 3D and 4D plates are legal as long as they meet BS AU 145e: charcoal-grey (not black) characters, the correct font, character height (79 mm) and spacing, a reflective base, and the supplier's name, postcode and BS AU 145e mark on the plate. Every road-legal plate we press at Dyno Details in Dagenham meets that standard. Anything with a tinted background, italics, fancy fonts or a coloured outline is show-only and not road-legal.

How much is my number plate worth?

Plate value depends on demand for the combination — short dateless plates, name plates, initials and dictionary-word plates carry the most value. We don't buy or sell private registrations directly, but we'll happily press a new set of physical plates once you've transferred a private reg to your vehicle. For valuations, check DVLA's official auctions or a registered plate broker.

When do new UK number plates come out?

New age-identifier plates are released twice a year in the UK — on 1 March and 1 September. So '26' plates arrived on 1 March 2026 and '76' plates follow on 1 September 2026. The two digits after the area code show the half-year the car was first registered.

How do I change my number plate to a private reg?

Three steps: 1) Transfer the private reg to your vehicle through DVLA (V750 certificate or online transfer) — DVLA will send a new V5C log book showing the new registration. 2) Bring or upload the new V5C plus your driving licence. 3) We press the new plates (1–2 working days) and you fit them — both front and rear must match the V5C before you drive on the road.

What's the difference between 4D, 3D gel and standard number plates?

Standard plates are pressed acrylic with printed characters — fully road-legal and the cheapest option. 3D gel plates have a domed gel-resin top giving the digits a glossy 3D look. 4D plates use raised laser-cut acrylic characters glued onto the plate face for a sharper, more aggressive look. 4D gel combines both — raised characters with a domed gel top for the deepest finish.

Are 4D and 3D gel number plates legal in the UK?

Yes — when made to BS AU 145e and using the correct charcoal-grey font, font size, character spacing and reflective base. Every road-legal plate we press carries the BS AU 145e marking, our supplier code and postcode. We don't fit tinted backgrounds, italics, fancy fonts or sticker plates for road use — those are show-only.

How long do number plates take to make?

Most orders are pressed within 1–2 working days. Collection from our Dagenham studio (RM8 1QH) can often be same-day if ordered before 11am. Royal Mail signed-for postage adds 1–3 working days depending on the service picked at checkout.

What documents do I need to order road-legal plates?

By law we have to see proof of name and address (driving licence, utility bill or council tax bill) and proof you're entitled to use the registration (V5C log book, new keeper slip, V750/V778 retention certificate, or hire/lease agreement). Upload photos at checkout — we verify before pressing.

Can I order show plates without sending a V5?

Yes. Tick the 'show plate' box at checkout and we'll skip the document checks. Show plates are for off-road, display or photoshoot use only and aren't road-legal — fitting one to drive on the road risks an MOT failure and a £1,000 fine.

Do you do plates for Range Rovers, Defenders and JDM imports?

Yes — we press all common UK sizes: standard 520×111 mm, Range Rover / plinth rear 533×152 mm, 4x4 square rear 285×203 mm and full square 285×203 mm both ends for JDM and US imports. Pick your size at checkout.

Do you make retro number plates?

Yes — retro plates are £60 a pair, pressed in the classic style with a white front and yellow rear reflective base and raised gloss-black characters. They're fully road-legal and BS AU 145e marked, just like the rest of our range.

Can I post my plates instead of collecting?

Yes. Royal Mail 2nd Class Signed (£8.05, 2–3 working days) or 1st Class Signed (£9.05, next working day) at checkout. We dispatch as soon as plates are pressed and documents are verified.
